[AUDITORY] PhD studentship: Remastering for hearing-impaired viewers.

Dear list,

Would you (or your students) be interested in a PhD studentship focused on adapting TV/film soundtracks for hearing-impaired listeners?

The modest goal is to adapt hearing-aid-like algorithms to provide the many hearing-impaired viewers with a better alternative than simply turning up the volume. If a generic solution could be found to satisfy a decent proportion of listeners, such an audio stream could be made available as an interactive digital service. The project also allows us to investigate the psychoacoustics at play in audio mixing and mastering.

The locally sourced funding is not yet guaranteed, but (with the right student) the odds are favourable. The ideal student would have

·         A background in psychology, engineering or other relevant fields.

·         A high 2.1 or 1st (or equivalent) and/or a Masters

·         Experience of working with audio

·         Computer-programming experience (or a willingness to learn)

The full maintenance grant is unfortunately restricted to UK residents, with a fees-only version available to EU students (see link below for small print). If this would prevent you from applying, get in touch nonetheless so that I can keep you informed of future projects with less xenophobic funding.

The research would take place at Queen’s University Belfast (http://www.qub.ac.uk/) in collaboration with Josh Reiss (http://www.eecs.qmul.ac.uk/~josh/) and BBC Northern Ireland (https://www.bbc.co.uk/northernireland).

If you would be interested in applying, please get in touch.
