ISMA 2017 - Call for Papers

Dear Colleagues,

The 2017 International Symposium on Musical Acoustics (ISMA) will be held in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, 18-22 June 2017. The 2017 ISMA will provide a focused, intimate forum with single-track presentation and poster sessions on musical acoustics topics, including:

- Physics-based analysis and modeling of musical instruments (brass, woodwind, strings, percussion, singing voice).

- Experimental techniques for sound and instrument characterization (vibration and acoustical properties, quality assessment, instrument documentation and preservation).

- Analysis and synthesis of musical sound (techniques for signal modeling, numerical synthesis, radiativity simulation).

- Psychoacoustics, music cognition, performance, pedagogy (timbre analysis, perceptual evaluation, musician-instrument interaction, technology-enhanced learning, auralization).

We formally invite the submission of papers or abstracts for admission to the 2017 ISMA:

- Full-paper submissions will be peer-reviewed; if accepted, they will be included as "peer-reviewed publications" in the online proceedings.

- Abstract submissions will be evaluated by the scientific committee; authors of accepted abstracts will have the opportunity to submit a full paper to be included in the online proceedings as part of the "non-peer reviewed publications”.

Two “Best Student Paper” awards will be granted to the authors of two selected papers from the full-paper submissions, with a subsequent invitation to submit extended versions of such papers for publication in Acta Acustica united with Acustica. In addition, one “Best Poster Presentation” award will be granted to one of the 2017 ISMA poster presenters.

Complete details about the conference and paper submission process are available at:

The 2017 ISMA is being hosted by the Computational Acoustic Modeling Laboratory in the Schulich School of Music at McGill University, together with the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology, and is also co-sponsored by the Acoustical Society of America. It will take place just prior to the Joint Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America and the European Acoustics Association in Boston, Massachusetts, USA from 25-29 June 2017. Bus transportation to the Boston meeting, probably on 24 June, will be offered at minimal cost (possibly even free), thanks to a financial contribution from the ASA.
