Postdoc, Research Engineer and Research Student positions in audio research at SUTD Singapore

(Apologies for any cross-posting. Please forward to anyone that may be interested)

Post-doctoral Fellow, Research Engineer and Research Student in audio research at SUTD Singapore

The Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), established in collaboration with MIT, is now inviting high calibre candidates for several posts in audio research.

About the SUTD Audio Research Group
The SUTD Audio Research Group is formed by young and energetic faculties/researchers with strong passion on novel and pioneer audio research. We are in close collaboration with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU), The National University of Singapore (NUS), Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), and Purdue University Northwest. We also have various industry partners including Apple Singapore, Thales, Sennheiser, Changi General Hospital, KKH Hospital, Singapore Sport School, as well as close connection with the music production individuals.

We currently have 2 postdocs, 3 RAs and 3 PhD students. In 2016 we manage to get a total of S$700,000 funding. Here are our current on-going projects:
  • An audio content based semantic music search system (new)
  • Teaching and Learning English Pronunciation by Generating the Vocal Tract Shapes from the Frequency Domain Information (new)
  • Development of an intuitive interactive platform for pre-operative communication between hospital and patients/caregivers (new)
  • SYNCBEAT: A personalised music-aid application to enhance auditory-motor synchronization in running
  • Combining Music Therapeutic Knowledge and the Science of Recovery In Game Design for Therapy and Rehabilitation

Project I - An audio content based semantic music search system
The purpose of this project is to develop an algorithm that can search for semantic music from its audio content with machine learning technique. User can search for music on a 2D emotional plane, with semantic keywords, or by their own biofeedback. The global digital music sale was US$6.9 billion in 2014. There was a huge 39% increase in the music subscription business model, which is now the key driver of the global music market. People subscribe for music service for a wide variety of music choice. For example, they are not just looking for a particular music title, but they need 100 energetic songs for jogging. So they need music suggestion. They need a powerful music search tool. Currently the available music search engines can only search with manually created label such as music title. We plan to launch a start-up company, sell the music search service in a freemium subscription business model. We will also use the algorithm to develop specialized apps for different customer segments such as car manufacturers.

This is a new 1.5 years project funded by Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART). More about SMART: http://smart.mit.edu/about-smart/about-smart.html
We aim for publication as well as commercialisation. The goal is to spin-off with the patented technology and launch a startup business. We expect the postdoc/engineer to participate/lead the spin-off company after we complete this project.

Project II - Teaching and Learning English Pronunciation by Generating the Vocal Tract Shapes from the Frequency Domain Information
The purpose of this project is to develop an interactive app for both mobile devices and the Internet that helps learners improve their pronunciation through the provision of a real time visual representation of their vocal tract shapes. Through such feedback, it is envisaged that learners will be able to learn how to modify their tongue position, lip shape and height of their tongue in the oral cavity to “match” the vocal tract shape of the normed vocal pattern of that particular sound.  For example, learners articulating the high front unrounded vowel /e/ will be able to see their vocal tract shape against an outline or indicators that present the desired or targeted vocal tract shape. Such normed or targeted patterns, for the purposes of the project, will be assumed to be the standard British English, which is the generally accepted norm for Singapore schools.

This is a new 2 years project funded by the Singapore Ministry of Education Academic Fund (MAF).
