Research Engineer Position at Institute of Movement Sciences

Aix-Marseille University & CNRS, France

 SoniMove project

Background

The Institute of Movement Sciences (Aix-Marseille University & CNRS, France) seeks a motivated Research Engineer to join the project “SONIMOVE: Inform, guide and learn by sounds” under the supervision of Prof. C. Bourdin and Dr. L. Bringoux (funded by ANR).

The SoniMove project focuses on the contribution of calibrated sounds to control functional gestures attached to new Human-Machine Interfaces (HMI) for cars and to expert gestures specific to sport and music. It is based on the natural tendency of our cognitive system to identify the sources that produce the sounds we hear and to precisely identify the dynamic relations (time and space) between sounds and movements. It is founded on a collaboration between three partners: two academic laboratories with expert knowledge in the domains of acoustics (Laboratory of Mechanics and Acoustics, LMA, Marseille) and of movement sciences (Institute of Movement Sciences, ISM, Marseille) and an industrial partner that is strongly involved in innovative research and development (Society Peugeot-Citroën Automobiles, PSA).

Position:

The successful candidate will work at the Institute of Movement Sciences (ISM;http://www.ism.univ-amu.fr/) that offers an international, productive and interdisciplinary research environment. The work will consist of:

-          Assisting in the smooth running of the laboratory, taking care of effective connection of hardware components (IR, Bluetooth, wireless connections, motion capture system, visual and auditory stimulation devices) and all software components;

-          Translating mathematical and computational models into the Matlab;

-          Building algorithms to create system of rules for the experimental setup and for subsequent data analyses;

-          Participating and supervising smooth running of the experimental sessions;

-          Participating in all meetings related to the project.

Requirements:

- M. Sc. in Engineering/Science with experience in R&D or PhD;

- Experience with programming: Matlab, and Python/C+++/Labview;

- Strong mathematical and modelling skills;

- Interest in the human movement science/sport performance/sound processing;

- Good English skills a bonus;

- Sound processing experience desirable;

- Ability to integrate and work closely with other team members.

Terms of employment

The Engineer position has a duration of 1 year (+ 1 renewable year). We offer excellent research facilities. The starting date is June 1st 2016.

The net salary will range between 1400 and 1980 euros/month, depending on qualification and previous experience.

Application procedure

For more information, interested candidates can contact Christophe Bourdin (christophe.bourdin@univ-amu.fr) or Lionel Bringoux (lionel.bringoux@xxxxxxxxxxx) or Marta Bienkiewicz (marta.bienkiewicz@xxxxxxxxxxx).

Applicants should send their motivation letter, a full CV, a one-page summary of research background and interests, and two letters of reference supporting their candidature.

Please send applications before the 29th February 2016 for a final decision before the end of March 2016.

Best wishes
Marta
