The center is part of Starkey’s Research division, which consists of world-class clinicians, engineers and scientists who are working together to create innovative solutions for improving listening experiences and hearing care.

 

The Starkey Hearing Research Center is currently seeking a Research Scientist in hearing science to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to rapidly test scientific ideas and efficiently translate them into new listening solutions that touch the lives of millions around the world. Researchers at the Center create and apply insights in psychoacoustics, cognition, speech communication, and computational modeling, combined with modern insights in acoustics, audiology, and signal processing to develop new audio processing algorithms, new diagnostic-based fitting procedures, and new patient-benefit validation approaches. The position is responsible for conducting auditory perception research on listeners with hearing impairment aimed at creating innovative solutions for enhanced listening for Starkey’s product pipeline. The position will report to the Director of the Starkey Hearing Research Center.

 

The Center’s location in Berkeley next to the world-class University of California as well as its proximity to the vibrant innovation culture of San Francisco and Silicon Valley makes for an intellectually stimulating environment to work in.

 

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess:

Education:

·       Ph.D. in Hearing Science or related scientific fields such as psychology, neuroscience, or electrical engineering, with research expertise in hearing impairment;

Experience:

·       Extensive experience conducting auditory perception experiments as well as experience designing a variety of different experimental protocols

·       Experience with the study of impaired and normal hearing

·       Experience working with computational auditory models

·       Understanding of hearing aid technology and fitting systems

·       Skills in the use of audiological and psychoacoustic instrumentation

·       Familiarity with quantitative methods of analyzing signals and systems, including the use of MATLAB for performing such analyses

·       Statistical analysis capabilities

·       Good written and verbal communication skills

·       Ability to function effectively in an environment requiring rapid testing of ideas and fast innovation

·       Strong leadership characteristics

·       Exceptional ability for innovation and creativity

 

Responsibilities:

·       Design and conduct hearing science research that will lead to innovations in the hearing aid industry;

·       Analyze and interpret experimental results within the context of scientific discovery;

·       Manage experiment documentation and procedures, including writing experiment protocols and scientific reports on outcomes of research;

·       Publish research in scientific journals and present results at conferences;

·       Support corporate intellectual property strategy by monitoring patent literature in relevant areas of expertise, creating and filing patentable inventions, and participating in and contributing ideas to department and company-wide innovation initiatives;

·       Help nurture collaborative relationships with external researchers by managing, consulting, and/or participating in all phases of collaborative studies;

·       Promote and support research internally and externally;

·       Provide research expertise and support to other departments within the company.

 

Compensation and benefits

Compensation will be commensurate with the experience of the candidate and includes: a 401K plan, Profit Sharing, comprehensive health care plan, and an Employee Stock Ownership Plan. In addition an aggressive 80% tuition reimbursement program is available to all Starkey employees.
