Dear Colleagues, Orange Labs is looking for a candidate for a fully funded three-year PhD on the topic of the assessment of the Quality of Experience of audiovisual services in mobility situations to start in fall 2015. Smartphones or tablet computers are now efficient tools to access audiovisual services, either for applications to watch television or movies (video on demand, streaming, ...), or for interactive applications such as videoconferencing,
co-browing, video sharing or e-learning. Whereas the video quality has been significantly improved over the past years, the audio component received less attention. However the binaural technology, which allows to create immersive 3D sound for headphones,
is a promising solution to add spatial sound for audiovisual services in mobility situations. The objective of the PhD thesis is to study the benefit (in terms of Quality of Experience - QoE) of binaural sound in the context of mobile watching of 2D video with smartphones or tablet computer. Two main issues will be investigated :
first, the measurement of QoE in mobility situation (with special attention to « in situ » measurement), and second, cross-modal assessment including both audio and visual stimuli. These questions call for new methods of QoE assessment.
