Postdoc position on Binaural Electrical Hearing at Acoustics Research Institute in Vienna

A Postdoc position (100%) is available at the Acoustics Research Institute (ARI) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna, Austria. ARI is an interdisciplinary research institution covering the fields of psychoacoustics, computational acoustics, mathematical signal processing, and acoustical phonetics.

The position is available for up to three years as part of the project "Bilateral Cochlear Implants: Physiology and Psychophysics". The project combines binaural physiology, performed at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary (MEEI) in Boston (PI: Bertrand Delgutte) and binaural psychophysics, performed at ARI (PIs: Bernhard Laback, Piotr Majdak). The goal is to advance bilateral electrical stimulation methods to improve the access to binaural cues in cochlear-implant (CI) listeners.

The successful candidate with work at ARI in Vienna within the Psychoacoustics and Experimental Audiology group. The lab at ARI provides well-established and sophisticated infrastructure to conduct highly controlled CI and acoustic-hearing psychophysical experiments. The successful candidate will design, implement, and conduct psychophysical experiments with CI and normal-hearing listeners, and analyze as well as publish results in scientific journals and conferences. The successful candidate will coordinate the psychophysical experiments with the physiological work of our cooperation partners in Boston.

Applicants should:

  • hold a PhD in natural/technical sciences, psychology, or another discipline related to hearing
  • have scientific experience in a field related to hearing science, preferably binaural hearing
  • have extensive experience in designing, programming, and conducting psychophysical experiments
  • have excellent skills in scientific presentation and writing
  • be able to integrate into a multidisciplinary research team and cooperate with external project partners.

The salary will be EUR 48.767,- per year (before taxes; 100% = 40 hours/week). The place of work is in the city center of Vienna.

Applicants should submit a letter of application, a list of publications, and recommendation letter(s) until July 16th 2014 to:
