Applications are invited for a three-year PhD studentship to pursue research in objectification of microphone-array audio signals, which is an area of spatial audio signal processing relating to a new £5M EPSRC-funded research programme "S3A: Future Spatial
Audio for an Immersive Listener Experience at Home" (http://gtr.rcuk.ac.uk/).
Objectification describes the task of converting an array of microphone signals into salient audio objects that may then be manipulated for spatial audio production. The successful applicant will join CVSSP (surrey.ac.uk/cvssp), one of the primary centres
for audio-visual signal processing & computer vision in Europe with over 130 researchers. CVSSP has a grant portfolio of £12M, a track-record of pioneering research leading to technology transfer in collaboration with UK industry, and world-class audio and
video facilities. CVSSP forms part of the Department of Electronic Engineering (surrey.ac.uk/ee), recognised as a top department for both learning and research in the UK.
Entry Requirements
Candidates must have a First or 2:1 Bachelor’s degree and an MSc with distinction in an appropriate discipline. They should be able to demonstrate excellent mathematical, analytical and computer programming skills. Advantage will be given to applicants
with experience in one or more areas of audio and speech signal processing, acoustics, blind source separation, and/or machine learning.
Funding
The award will be for a period of 3 years starting in October 2014 and it will cover the cost of UK tuition fees plus a competitive stipend for living expenses for UK/EU citizens. International applicants must secure their own funding for appropriate
fees and living expenses.
