Thank you for the prompt response.
105 dB !!??
I will from now on strongly advise AGAINST people attending events at SAT http://sat.qc.ca until such time as it is clear that the production team at SAT understands the damaging effects to hearing of the sound pressure levels that seem to be found as “acceptable”.
These are the figures from the Center for Disease Control:
Potentially Hazardous Sound Level |
---|
Sound Source Examples | Sound Intensity (Decibels) | Recommended Exposure Limits For Repeated Exposures* | Comments |
---|
School cafeteria | 85 | 8 hours | Prolonged exposures might cause slight hearing loss. Hearing protection should be used if regularly exposed to this sound level beyond the exposure limit.‡ | Band class | 90 | 2 hours | Hearing protection should be used if regularly exposed to this sound level beyond the exposure limit.‡ | Wood or metal shop, power tools, snowmobile | 100 | 15 minutes | Hearing protection should be used if exposed to this sound level beyond the exposure limit.‡ | Hazardous Sound Level |
---|
Sound Source Examples | Sound Intensity (Decibels) | Recommended Exposure Limits For Repeated Exposures* | Comments |
---|
Personal stereo system at high volume | 105 | 5 minutes | Hearing protection should be used if exposed to this sound level beyond the exposure limit.‡ |
Might I strongly suggest that the production team at SAT review the procedures for assuring the public that sound pressure levels, DO NOT, reach or exceed 90dB.

Hello Mr Austin Our venue is taking care of the sound level and we are never up to 105 DBA at the sound board. We don't want to hurt our clients. We have a multi-diffusion PA system that allows us to have a good sound all over the room without pushing the front PA at a high level. We are probably one of the only venue like this in Montreal, close to European norms. Hi
Some students in my classes have told me that the sound pressure levels of SAT shows may be dangerously high and that people should wear good earplugs to avoid hearing damage.
Could you let me know how you monitor sound pressure levels, and what are the peak and RMS values at shows.
Thanks for your time
