Having pondered the question and the responses for a few days=2C I still=
 am not clear on the core issue=2E For me this is partly tied up with th=
e lack of definitions of the term =22note=22=2E In my classes I try to a=
void the word without specific context to delimit the meaning=2E

There are two =5Bor more=5D possible interpretations here=3A
 =5B1=5D onset time to onset time
 =5B2=5D duration of the sounding element
 =5B2a=5D adding the duration of any non-sounding element=5Bs=5D -- rest=
s or silences

There is not a great deal of solo monophonic music in the classical west=
ern music repertoire compared with the quantity of music that has more t=
han one pitch sounding at one time=2E

Within the solo monophonic repertoire=2C composed music which is beyond =
being a very simple tune=2C eg God Save the Queen played on a flute=2C i=
s very often working to create the illusion of more than one pitch at a =
time=2E To see this in a very simple / complex example=2C take the Bach =
Prelude in C Major from book One of the Well-Tempered Clavier=2E It can =
be played with one finger=2E It can also be heard as a five-voice homoph=
onic composition=2E

Since the well-known repertoire is so small=2C it is likely a matter of =
going to some much more relatively obscure sources=2C such as Johann Qua=
ntz
http=3A//imslp=2Eorg/wiki/Fantasies=5Fand=5FPreludes=5Ffor=5FFlute=5F(Qu=
antz=2C=5FJohann=5FJoachim)
or other solo =E9tudes=2E Being technical studies=2C they may not contai=
n the kind of information that you are looking for=2E

Another approach is to take the instrument in the context of being a sol=
oist in an ensemble=2E Depending upon the degree of precision you need=2C=
 determining the start of the onset can also be a problem=2C the sound o=
f a flute or trumpet for example having elements in common with determin=
ing the start-time of a c-v syllable such as =22too=22=2E

Can you provide a little more precision=2E

Thanks

Kevin
