For 2013,  ten PhD projects at the Institute of Hearing Research (IHR), Nottingham, UK, are offered from the areas of neuroscience, cognitive neuroscience, experimental psychology and engineering. Five of these are collaborative projects with our partners at the Nottingham Hearing Biomedical Research Unit (NHBRU). Neuroscience

• Neural adaptation â from single neurons to evoked potentials
• Artificial recognition of sounds in complex scenes from auditory neuronal activity
• Columnar organisation of the speech area of human cerebral cortex

Cognitive Neuroscience

• Using EEG to measure cortical reorganisation after hearing loss

Experimental Psychology

• Effect of hearing loss on auditory spatial attention in older listeners
• Effect of auditory training and hearing instruments on cognitive development in children with mild hearing loss
• Development of questionnaire-based assessment of listening difficulties in children
• The effect of hearing ability and cognition on speech perception in noise
• See you, hear you: The contribution of visual information to understanding speech in background noise

Engineering

• Dynamic speech-based compression for hearing prostheses
