I have used a combination of the freeware Blender and iMovie HD to achieve this. The result is not professional quality I think, but that can be bettered by using a good quality green screen and controlled lighting. That's really the most important part, and in a lab setting that should be easier. 

If you like I can show you some examples of what you can achieve with this solution. 

nb: iMovie is only required to add the sound back in. If you can do it with some other software, then you don't need iMovie. Blender can create the video and create the final sound, but (as of yet) cannot embed the sound in the video.
