PhD Position: Noise annoyance indicators for tram noise combined with urban road traffic noise

For countries belonging to the European Union, L DEN index (day-evening-night level) has to be used in noise maps in order to represent the exposure situation due to various community noises, such as road traffic noise. Given that L DEN is a mean energy-based index, its relevance as a noise annoyance indicator is questioned.

This PhD work aims to contribute to a better characterization of the total annoyance due to tram noise combined with road traffic noise in urban areas. It is based on an experiment carried out under laboratory conditions. Various vehicles of urban road traffic (two-wheeled vehicles, light vehicles, heavy vehicles and buses) and tram vehicles will be considered in diverse driving conditions. Firstly, acoustical factors, and especially auditory attributes, which may influence noise annoyance, will be studied. Secondly, noise annoyance indicators taking into account the influent acoustical factors will be proposed, and tested during noise sequences of longer duration in simulated conditions. This PhD work will enable the enhancement of noise annoyance indicators for tram noise combined with urban road traffic noise. It will also enable to compare different methods for assessing short-term noise annoyance.
