2 PhD positions in Jyvaskyla, Finland

Dear colleagues,

We are pleased to announce the opening of two PhD positions at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland for 3 years (+1 year depending performance). The positions are within the new Center of Excellence in Interdisciplinary Music Research, led by Prof. Petri Toiviainen. This centre will comprise ca. 30 researchers from the Universities of Jyväskylä (Music Cognition Team) and Helsinki (Brain and Music Team).

Within the Center, the focus of the research efforts is divided into three themes: 1) music cognition (especially rhythm, tonality, and melody perception), 2) music motorics (in particular, the relationship between physical and musical gestures, the role of movement in synchronization and emotional expression) and 3) music and emotions (e.g., musical structure and emotions). Strong candidates are expected to work within one of these broad themes of research.

The music cognition team (MCT) is part of the Department of Music of the University of Jyväskylä in Finland. The city of Jyväskylä is located in the heart of the lake region of Finland. The University of Jyväskylä is one of the leading research universities of Finland. The Department of Music comprises about 40 staff members and provides training in musicology, music education, and music therapy. Moreover, the department runs the Master’s programme on music, mind, and technology, which was started in 2005.

Starting salary will be around 25 000 euros per annum but according to the Finnish Universities new salary system the salary will depend on personal work performance assessment (up to maximum of +46%) and the job demands. The posts will start at the beginning of the year 2008.
