A fully funded position at the Research Associate level is available at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, DC. A copy of the job requirements are posted below. Please contact either Ken W. Grant (grant@xxxxxxxxxxxxx) for further information.

------------------------
The Research Associate will be responsible for performing a range of tasks supporting a research program aimed at characterizing and modeling suprathreshold distortions in auditory processing by persons with impaired hearing. These projects will be conducted by the Research Section of the Army Audiology and Speech Center at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, DC. The overall project will be under the supervision of the Director of Research, Army Audiology and Speech Center, and day-to-day responsibilities will be under the supervision of the Director of the Auditory-Visual Speech Recognition laboratory.

Responsibilities include :

  1. Help coordinate various research studies in the Auditory-Visual Speech Recognition Laboratory. This will include help with literature reviews, experimental design, programming for stimulus presentation and data collection, and equipment set-up and calibration.
  2. Work closely on the development of a generalized model of auditory-visual speech perception. Analyze data on oral-facial kinematics to determine how the various movements of a talking face aid in speech understanding under auditory-visual presentation modes (i.e., face-to-face communication).
  3. Collect data on speech recognition in combinations of noise (steady state, modulated, and multi-talker) and reverberation in normal-hearing and hearing-impaired persons.
  4. Determine how rate of speech production affects the auditory, visual, and auditory-visual recognition of phonetic features.
  5. Work closely with other scientists at the Army Auditory and Speech Center to interface data with developing models of speech processing.
  6. Work closely with scientists from other facilities on development and modifications of the Auditory Processing Model.
  7. Design and implement new scientific studies as needed, help with data analysis, writing, and publication.
  8. Maintaining research records according to current HIPAA regulations.
  9. Perform other duties as assigned.

Experience Required:

Several years of experience in Hearing Science, Linguistics, Computer Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering or related field with an emphasis on auditory processing of speech and other sounds or related field with an emphasis on auditory processing of speech and other sounds is required. Background knowledge in the following areas is preferred:  experimental design and methods for research involving human subjects; psychophysics; signal processing; statistics; and computer programming.

Education Required:

Ph.D. in Hearing Science, Linguistics, Computer Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering or related field of acoustics is required. Candidates with post-doctoral experience are preferred but not required.
