These studies are not about how long it takes to perform processes,
but rather about how long a sample is required to provide sufficient
timbre information to do this four choice task. So there is
sufficient timbre information in a short sample to identify the vowel
or instrument, and you need a longer sample to achieve equivalent
performance on a four-choice pitch-chroma task.
I understand your point. Nevertheless, it seems that auditory object
discrimination is indeed very short (here they write something like
60-70-ms in
order to distinguish between man-made versus living objects sounds):
