Re: How to create apparent continuity of a tone without increasing the loudness of the white noise about 20 times as that of the tone?

Dear Annekathrin:

The general rule governing "apparent continuity" has been expressed as "If there is contextual evidence that a sound may be present at a given time, and if the peripheral units stimulated by a louder sound include those that would be stimulated by the anticipated fainter sound, then the fainter sound may be heard as present." Since you wish to use noise as an inducing sound for the 440 Hz tone, probably a 1/3-octave noise (approximating a critical band) centered at 440 Hz would be a good choice. Incidentally, Chapter 6 entitled "Perceptual Restoration of Missing Sounds" in Warren (1999) discusses the history, experiments, mechanisms, and theories that have been proposed for this illusion. (Richard M. Warren, Auditory Perception: A New Analysis and Synthesis, Cambridge University Press, 1999).

Best wishes,

Richard

Dear list,

I would like to create the auditory illusion "apparent continuity". The structure of my tone is: 350ms tone (A) -25 ms burst of a white noise (B) -275 ms tone (A). A is a 440 Hz pure ton.

Does anybody know if there is a possibility to create an apparent continuity of the tone A without increasing the overall amplitude of the white noise about 20 times as that of the tone? Or is it a strict condition to enhance the loudness to create such an auditoy illusion effect? Or is it a strict condition to enhance the loudness if you want creat such an
auditory illusion effect?

Best, Annekathrin Weise.</x-tad-smaller>
