* SPHEAR (Speech, Hearing and Recognition) is a research network funded by
the European Commission Transfer and Mobility of Researchers programme from
1st March 1998 for four years.

* SPHEAR is researching models of hearing, particularly Computational
Auditory Scene Analysis and the Precedence Effect. The network links this work
to new methodologies for robust automatic speech recognition, primarily
'Missing Data' and 'Multistream'. Recognition for in-car applications is used
as a testbed. For more details, see
<http://www.dcs.shef.ac.uk/~pdg/sphear/sphear.htm

* The SPHEAR partners are

    University of Sheffield, GB
    Ruhr Universitat Bochum, DE
    Daimler-Chrysler Research, Ulm, DE
    Institute Communication Parle, Grenoble, FR
    IDIAP, Martigny, CH
    University of Keele, GB
Wire Communication Lab, University of Patras, GR.

* SPHEAR employs BOTH POSTDOCTORAL AND DOCTORAL RESEARCHERS (you can do part
or all of your Ph.D. within the network).

* By the TMR eligibility rules, all these researchers must
be under 35 years of age,
     be European Union citizens and
be prepared to work outside their own country.

* There will be opportunities for individuals to take a series of placements
to work in several SPHEAR labs who are collaborating on the same or related
tasks.

* Research students who have already commenced their doctoral studies may
spend part of their time on placements within SPHEAR.

* Research students will have their tuition fees paid by the network.

* Payment will be based on the Marie Curie TMR fellowship rates (details from
the web site)

If you are interested, send your CV and the names and addresses of two
referees to the address below. Indicate what SPHEAR tasks (see the web site)
and what SPHEAR labs interest you, and when you expect to be available.

Alternatively, talk to us at Eurospeech, where several SPHEAR papers will be
presented.
