Re: critical bands and dissonance
To David Huron: David, your mini-story does not really answer the question
because the P&L-data show 35 Hz as the frequency of maximum sensory
dissonance
versus 70 Hz as maximum roughness (Z&F), both in the region of 1000
Hz. This is stated independently from whatever critical bandwidth is
adopted.
Data for maximum sensory dissonance/roughness at lower regions show, in both
studies, a
similar ratio of 2.
To John Herschy:
The reference is Zwicker and Fastl, Psychoacoustics, Springer-Verlag, 1990.
The formula for AM is not specified but on inspecting the figures that
illustrate AM-tones, I assume that
(1+B*sin(2*pi*g*t))*A*sin(2*pi*f*t) may have been used, where g is the
modulation
frequency and f the carrier .
