Help: using mics as earphones

Theoretically, I know it is possible to drive a microphone "backwards" to
deliver signals similar to earphones. I am planning some experiments for
which such a method of delivering signals would be very desireable. Has
anybody used mics in such a way (and what were the mics) and what are the
consequences and limitations (i.e. frequency response, dynamic range, input
impendence problems, etc).
