Regarding the recent thread on speech/music/singing, there is an article
by ethnomusicologist George List on speech and song in Ethnomusicology
(the journal for the Society for Ethnomusicology) back in the 1960s or
70s.  There List proposed a diamond diagram in which four major variants
are identify to distinguish between speech and song.  Sorry that I don't
have the exact citation at hand.
