Dear list,
I have sent an inquiry about animal sounds on the internet sometimes ago
and got several responses. Many thanks again to those who have responded. I
also got requests to post the results. Here is a brief summary with my own
comments marked with *. I hope this can benefit some of you.

I built a web interface to a commercial sound-effects CD-ROM that I
worked on once. It has a wide range of CD-quality sound effects,
including a range of animals:

Good luck. It's a bit of a hack - it can be slow.

*I found what I need there. Dan assured me that I can download them for
non-commercial use. I have also got a response from Aware Inc, which sells
the CD-ROM for $250.00 a piece.

Dear Biao,
The cornell laboratory of ornithology has a library of natural sounds.
These are mostly birds, but they have also cats, dogs, and other animal and
non-animal sounds. You can get the data from them on a DAT tape and easily
upload it to the computer from the tape (they may have even easier ways of
doing it these days, I got a tape from them 2 years ago).
You can contact them at:

I am not sure, but I think there's a usenet newsgroup for this, something
like alt.binaries.sounds.animals.

Dear Dr. Tian,
I found an audio CD which might be convenient for your purpose:
KICG-1013 (King: Tokyo)
The title is long and in Japanese. The disk includes dog bark, cat meow,
cow moo and many other animal voices. It also contains insects' sounds.
Best regards,
Yoshitaka Nakajima

Biao,
Here's a summary of information about environmental sound collections that I
put together a while ago. I know the Hollywood Edge collection has a good
sampling of animal vocalizations, but there are probably better ones
available. The information below won't tell you where to find the best
collection of animal vocalization sounds, but it might give you a good lead.
If you'd be willing to let me know what collections you find, I'd appreciate
hearing about it.
Good luck,
Gary

Dear Colleagues,
Below is a brief summary of sources of recorded collections of environmental
sounds (and other sound effects) based on responses to the request I posted a
couple weeks ago. Geffen Systems sent me a catalog of sound effects
collections and a demo CD (no charge). They handle the BBC and Hollywood Edge
collections (audio CD versions) as well as many other collections. All but a
couple are on audio CDs and most are sold in sets of 5 or more, starting at
around $200 (some much higher). Most single-CD collections are $60. Both
Aware (Cambridge, MA) and Audiofile (Lexington, MA) sounded promising, but
they didn't respond to my email requests. The information I gathered
convinced me that the Hollywood Edge CD-ROM was the best for my needs.
The NEXTSTEP CD-ROM is a subset of three Hollywood Edge collections and it's
a fairly cost-effective way to get a wide range of high-quality sounds in a
format that will be very convenient for me.
Thanks again to all of you who sent suggestions.
