grouping sounds across time

It occurs to me that the duration of sequential elements can also affect
the listener's ability to distinguish the individual events. Thus, when
a sequence of, say, tones is presented with tonal duration of 200 ms,
one can hear that the sequence has individual tones in it. If the tempo
is stepped up so that the tonal duration is now 25 ms, one hears a single
sound. Warren has repeatedly pointed out this perceptual distinction, which
may be relevant to the issue of the perceptual grouping across time. Kathy
