stream segregation
To Auditory List
The kind of streaming that Pierre Divenyi is writing about, based on
parameters such as loudness or timbre, was studied by Douglas Johnson and
myself. The reference is "Stream Segregation and Peripheral Channeling,"
Music Perception volume 9, number 2 pages 155-184 (1991).
We used an interleaved melody paradigm and studied streaming
caused by ten different kinds of parameter changes. The data showed
that those parameter changes which led to peripheral channeling
were effective in creating stream segregation. Those changes that
did not separate melodies according to simple trajectories in the
periphery did not lead to streaming.
