Abstract:
Application of the refined iterated grid search (RIGS) MFP inversion method
to four of the WORKSHOP97 test cases (SD, AT, SO, and WA) has resulted in
some surprisingly accurate estimates for some geoacoustic parameters, i.e.,
sediment densities and attenuations, source ranges and depths, and some sediment
gradients. Another surprise was the sensitivity of the inversion to small errors
in the KRAKEN propagation model. This paper will discuss recent efforts to
understand the benefits and shortcomings of the RIGS method and to propose
future directions.
