A discussion meeting sponsored by the Technical Committee on Noise is held to review progress made to date on the actions initiated at the Denver meeting in 1993 to increase the role of the ASA in noise and noise control. Members of the steering committee and others involved in related supporting activity will review specific progress made in the areas of education, increasing public awareness about noise and noise control, and encouraging joint activity in this area with other professional organizations.

This special session deals with topics of bubble detection and cavitation monitoring in the ocean, in the laboratory and in man. The topics are relevant to sound propagation in the ocean, to industrial applications of ultrasound and to the safety and effectiveness of medical ultrasound. The title of the session is identical to that of a technical report under preparation by a working group (WG22) of the ASA's Accredited Standards Committee (S1) on Acoustics. In this introduction, the scope and purpose of the technical report will be explained, progress on its preparation will be described, and an invitation extended for suggestions to the working group.
